Andalusia means “to walk easy” in Spanish, a reference to our town’s outstanding access in the founding days. In today’s era of interstates and airplanes, access has become still easier.
U.S. 29, U.S. 84 and Alabama 55 lead straight to the heart of this largest city in the area. I-65 lies a mere 32 miles to the west. Those who don’t want to drive may fly a private charter or corporate aircraft into the Andalusia-Opp Municipal Airport just east of downtown.
And because we’re located just 85 miles south of Montgomery, 135 miles northeast of Mobile and 80 miles west of Dothan, we are by no means isolated from business, trade and cultural influences prevalent throughout Alabama. We even operate the Covington Area Transit System (CATS) public transportation to help residents reach any location within the county throughout the work week.
More than 10,000 people call Andalusia home, dubbing it “the heart of south Alabama.”
