Festivals & Fanfare
Every year, Birmingham hosts an assortment of festivals that attract hundreds of nationally renowned musicians, artists and performers to the city. Highlights include:
Alabama Blues Lover’s Festival: The finest blues musicians gather to sing the blues at this special festival that is held at the Alabama State Fairgrounds in Birmingham every May.
Artwalk: Artwalk is an arts festival that transforms Birmingham’s loft neighborhood into an arts district, featuring the work of nearly 100 visual artists, live musicians, street performers, food and drink vendors, children’s activities and a cakewalk. Held in September.
Birmingham Heritage Festival: A three-day celebration of African and Caribbean culture over a span of three days in late summer. The festival features a parade and musical performances in genres such as R&B, jazz, reggae, blues and hip-hop.
Birmingham International Festival: A celebration of cultural diversity. Each year a different country is highlighted in order to bring its culture, music, arts and business to the southeastern region.
Bluff Park Art Show: One of the finest outdoor juried shows in the Southeast, the Bluff Park Art Show is held each October in Hoover and features the work of more than 100 artists from across the country.
City Stages: Birmingham’s World-Class Music Festival, which is held the third weekend in June in the city’s downtown. More than 150 acts perform a variety of music, from gospel to rock, on 10 stages.
Do Dah Day: Held annually to benefit local animal shelters, Do Dah Day events include a parade of pets and their owners, a street fair and live music by national and local bands.
ONB Magic City Art Connection: A spring art festival that celebrates contemporary art, complete with entertainment, food and juried exhibits in painting, sculpture, watercolor, printmaking, glass, wood, fiber, clay, drawing, jewelry, pastel, 2D & 3D mixed media, metalworks, furniture and computer generated art.
Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival: A celebration of independent cinema in Birmingham’s historic downtown theater district. Filmmakers from around the world travel to Birmingham to showcase their work here.
