Interesting Past

Butler County was founded in 1819, named after Captain Richard Butler, a hero of the Creek Indian War. Originally, the land had been home to the Choctaw, Creek and Muscogee nations, and at various times was a territory of Spain, England, and France, respectively. The area now known as Greenville was for a time called Fort Dale, in honor of an important fort built during the aforementioned Creek Indian War.

Oddly enough, Alabama’s Greenville owes its current name to settlers from another Greenville. Settlers from Greenville, South Carolina found that this verdant, oak-studded landscape reminded them so much of home, a new Greenville was born in Butler County.
