In 2008, Field & Stream designated Guntersville as one of the Top 10 Fishing Towns in America, and in 2002, Guntersville was selected as Alabama’s #1 Intimate Getaway in a poll conducted by the Alabama Bureau of Tourism and Travel. Guntersville is one of the most breathtaking areas in the South and one of the finest sport fishing lakes in America. Located on Alabama’s largest lake, Guntersville rests peacefully at the base of the majestic mountains of the Appalachian range. The spectacular natural beauty and colorful panorama offered by 950 miles of winding shoreline and 69,000 acres of the sparkling, fun-filled waters of Lake Guntersville will have you in awe.

Guntersville is serious about the outdoors! Blessed with an abundance of recreational opportunities, you can choose from an assortment of activities on the lake, such as skiing, boating, and fishing and land activities such as hiking, biking, birding, or just taking a stroll on one of our many walking trails. Guntersville offers wonderful golfing opportunities in the area. Tee off at Broken Arrow, Gunter’s Landing, Lake Guntersville State Park, or Stoney Mountain.

Numerous fishing tournaments are held on Guntersville Lake every year. Over the years, Guntersville has proudly hosted 30 BASSMASTER tournaments. In the last few years, Guntersville has received national publicity, as ESPN2 airs an hour-long program on the Guntersville Tournaments. The program features highlights, exciting moments from the tournament, and the final weigh-in day.

BIRDING TRAIL

Guntersville is home to three sites on the North Alabama Birding Trail. At the Guntersville sites you might see Red-breasted Mergansers, Lesser Scaup, Gadwalls, as well as Common Loons, Hooded Grebes, and Red-necked Grebes. Other species to look for during the year include Doublecrested Cormorant, Osprey, and the Bald Eagle, all of which nest nearby.

STATE PARKS

The Lake Guntersville State Park, located seven miles from downtown Guntersville, offers camping, a newly renovated hotel and conference center, lakeside cabins, and mountain chalets. The State Park also offers visitors a beautiful golf course and numerous hiking trails.

Cathedral Caverns and Buck’s Pocket are two other state parks located less than 20 miles from Guntersville. Cathedral Caverns is a 14-acre underground world. Cathedral Caverns is home to the world’s largest stalagmite, largest cavern entrance, largest stalagmite forest, and largest frozen waterfall. Buck’s Pocket State Park is a unique canyon covering over 2,000 acres. Buck’s Pocket offers camping, picnic areas, and hiking trails.
