Al Field Trial Competition
Held the Second Week in February.
Canine enthusiasts compete yearly for bragging rights for owning the best hunting dogs. Classes of competition include amateur shooting dog, all age, derby and puppies. Amateur trials are also held annually, the first full weekend in March.

Jesse Owens Memorial Run
Third Saturday in May
Lawrence County, birthplace of the famous track star, Jesse Owens, is the setting for this 10K and Two Mile Run. This annual tribute to Owens, winner of four gold medals during the 1936 Olympics, is held on a state certified course and attracts runners from across the country.

Lawrence County Indian Festival
Third Weekend in May
Lawrence County, home of Alabama’s greatest Indian population, celebrates it’s rich Indian heritage each year with a colorful weekend of crafts, dance and demonstrations. Activities include basketry, pottery, bow making and tours of a Cherokee Indian Village at the Oakville Indian Mounds Park and Museum.

Courtland’s Picnic In The Park
First Saturday in June
Held each year on Courtland’s Town Square, the Picnic in the Park is family fun at its best. Open to everyone, the day’s activities include barbecue, chicken stew, arts and crafts, games, as well as country and gospel music.

Summerfest
First Saturday in August
The Courthouse Square in downtown Moulton is the setting for this day of arts and crafts, music, food and fellowship. The streets are filled with beautifully restored vintage automobiles competing for the best in their class during the festival’s antique and Classic Car Show.

Lawrence County Cotton Festival
Last Saturday in September
Visit Town Creek in the fall and see one of the country’s first cotton gins or test your skill in an old fashioned cotton pickin’ contest. Sample some of the valley’s best chicken stew, shop for art and crafts, visit the homemade quilt show or just sit back and enjoy some good country music. Area runners can sign up for the Cotton Pickin’ 5K Run.

Courtland’s Antique Car Show/Chili Cookoff
First Saturday in October
Held on Courtland’s Town Square. The square is surrounded by restored vintage automobiles competing for the best in their class during the car show. Also the best chili cooks try their hand to please the judges to win the Best Chili Award.

Oakville Indian Mounds Park and Museum
Lawrence County is home to Alabama’s largest Indian population. The Oakville Indian Mounds Park and Museum is a tribute to the county’s Indian population and their ancestors. This historical site features a Copena burial mound, named for the copper and galena metals used by Indians of the period, and 1.8-acre ceremonial mound, believed to be the cultural center of the area’s Woodland Indians. Large limestone crypts dating as early as 1816 offer clues to the frontiersmen who inhabited the area after the Indians. The park features a museum, a 7-foot Sequoyah carving, gift shop and an Indian Village.

Wheeler Dam
Located on the Tennessee River joining Lawrence and Lauderdale counties, Wheeler Dam is operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority. The dam was built in 1936 and named for Confederate General Joe Wheeler. The dam is more than 72 feet high and 1 1/5 miles long. Recreational opportunities around the lake’s shoreline include excellent fishing for smallmouth bass and other game fish, sailing and water-skiing.

Wheeler Station
Wheeler Station Hunting Preserve located on the 13,000-acre Wheeler Estate, offers wild bird hunts and preserve hunts in the Old South tradition. A guest lodge overlooks the Tennessee River. The Sporting Clay arena offers 10 fields with stations for the novice to the expert.

Animal House Zoological Park
This 100-acre facility features more than 500 exotic and endangered animals of some 56 different species. The park features everything from African lions to wildebeests to penguins.

Lawrence County Archives
The Lawrence County Historical Commission operates an archives containing numerous records, many dating from the early 1800s. The archives contain marriage, mortgage, and tax records, along with records from probate court, circuit court and county court. There are also weekly newspapers, wills, deeds, census reports and miscellaneous papers.

Jesse Owens Memorial Park
This park honors Olympic great Jesse Owens, an Oakville native who won four gold medals in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, the first American and the second athlete in history to win four gold medals. The 20-acre park features a Visitor Center, a Jesse Owens home birthplace replica, a 14 1/2-foot tall statue of Owens with the Olympic rings and a 1936 torch replica. A museum featuring a timeline of Owens’s life from his early days in Oakville, through his university and Olympic success, is located in the park.

Deer Run Golf Course
This 18-hole professional golf course featuring large bent-grass greens is located in Moulton, with the foothills of Bankhead National Forest as a backdrop. Deer Run is host to a number of annual tournaments, including the Lawrence County Open.

William B. Bankhead National Forest and Sipsey Wilderness Area
Bankhead is Alabama’s largest national forest, with some 180,000 acres, and is home of Alabama’s only nationally designated Wild and Scenic River, the Sipsey. Known as the "land of a thousand waterfalls," this vast monument to nature and man is ideal for hiking, horseback riding, hunting, boating, fishing, swimming, canoeing and more. Within the forest is Sipsey Wilderness, designated in 1975 as Alabama’s first national wilderness area, with a host of rare birds, mammals, and an abundance of swift streams, limestone bluffs, wildlife and wildflowers. The state’s largest tree, a 500-year-old, 150-foot tall Poplar, is located here. Indian relics also abound in the Bankhead National Forest, one of the southeast’s premier sites for petroglyphs, prehistoric drawings and rock carvings.

Doublehead Resort and Lodge
Doublehead Resort and Lodge, which overlooks scenic Wilson Lake on the Tennessee River, cater to the adventurous frontiersmen seeking the great outdoors at a leisurely pace. Situated on a point, Doublehead Lodge offers stunning views and easy access by water or land.

Joe Wheeler State Park
Joe Wheeler State Park is nested on the north and south banks of the Tennessee River in both Lawrence and Lauderdale Counties. It has everything necessary for a relaxing vacation or day trip.

The local cities offer a variety of parks and programs through their Parks and Recreation Departments.

Before obtaining power, water or phone service in Lawrence County, you must come to the 911 office in Moulton and get an address card to present to these offices. The 911 office is located in the Lehman Wood Building at 555 Walnut Street, Moulton.

Automobile Registration
Newcomers to Alabama have 30 days upon establishing residency to change their out-of-state vehicle registration to Alabama registration. To register your automobile, you must submit a certificate of title, the vehicle registration and possibly submit a bill of sale to Lawrence County Tax Commissioner office located at the County Courthouse, 14330 Court Street, Suite 104, Moulton.

Driver’s Licenses
Newcomers have 30 days upon establishing residency to change their out-of-state driver’s licenses to valid Alabama licenses or, if moving within the state, to record their new address. Out-of-state newcomers must present a certified document of identification, preferably a valid driver’s license from another state. Driver’s licenses are issued for four-year periods and can be obtained from the Driver’s License Examiner’s Office located in the Lawrence County Courthouse, Suite 108, Moulton.

Voter Registration
To register to vote, newcomers must present their Social Security number(if they have one), the names and addresses of two persons living in the county who can identify them, and another means of identification, such as a driver’s license or birth certificate, to the Board of Registrars office located in the Lawrence County Courthouse.

Finance
Serving Lawrence County are four banks, five branch banks, three credit unions and four finance companies.

Area and Climate
The county seat is Moulton, which has an altitude of 650 feet above sea level. The average minimum temperature in January is 31 degrees and the average maximum temperature in July is 89 degrees. Average rainfall is 55.06 inches. Length of growing season is from early April to late October.
