Historic Downtown

Monroeville’s cherished heritage is kept alive through several historical sites located within the downtown area.

Constructed over a century ago, in 1903, Monroeville’s Old Courthouse is a living testament of the community’s rich heritage. This architecturally stunning building represents one of the most photographed historic sites in the state. Located atop the building’s highest point is a domed clock tower, a prominent symbol of both the city and county.

Located on the south lawn of the Old Courthouse is a monument built in honor of “Atticus Finch,” the fictional hero of To Kill A Mockingbird. Erected in 1997 by the Alabama Bar Association, the monument for Atticus Finch represents the ideal model for nondiscriminatory justice.

The courthouse is also home to the Monroe County Heritage Museums. The facility features rotating art and cultural exhibits, along with three permanent exhibits “Celebrating 100 Years: Old Monroe County Courthouse;” “Truman Capote: A Childhood in Monroeville;” and “Harper Lee.” Each spring, the Monroe County Heritage Museums presents To Kill A Mockingbird, a popular play version of the award-winning book. The production remains a notable highlight in the vitality of present-day Monroeville, drawing thousands of visitors into the community each year. Act One of the play takes place on the Old Courthouse lawn, while Act Two moves into the Old Courthouse Courtroom.

The Monroe County Public Library has been in its location at the old LaSalle Hotel since 1984. The structure is situated on the site of one of the oldest parcels of land recognized for continuous usage in the area. Since the facility’s construction, it has been used in several ways, including a stable, homes, a Methodist parsonage and hotels. Today, the library is teeming with a great number of resources, including fiction, non-fiction, biographical information, reference books, a genealogy room, Internet access and more.
