Parks & Recreation
Montevallo has access to a plenitude of recreational opportunities. The City’s Parks and Recreation Board maintains several parks and facilities, including Stephens Park, Montevallo Golf Course, ball fields and the popular Orr Park. Orr Park is perfect for fishing and canoeing along Shoal Creek, and visitors will notice something peculiar in the park.
Local artist Tim Tingle has carved many works of art into the sides of cedar trees along the way. There are over 40 different sculptures hidden throughout the park, from portraits to dragons and other fantastical creatures.
Montevallo is also near several state and national parks, including Brierfield Ironworks Historical State Park. This state park is perfect for camping, hiking and swimming, and also is the site of a reenactment of the Federal attack on the furnaces and other Civil War skirmishes. In addition, it is home to the J. Henry Country Store, and Mulberry Church, a frequent site for weddings and gatherings. Lightsey & Hubbard Cabins, the Hayes House and the Sunshine Morton House, are all available to rent, and offer a rustic retreat for anyone looking for a wilderness getaway.
Within 15 minutes of Montevallo is Oak Mountain State Park, the largest in Alabama. In addition to fishing, boating, camping, golfing and hiking, a boardwalk at the Alabama Wildlife Center offers visitors a close look at hawks, owls and other wildlife.
