Tallassee History

Patterson Log Cabin

Hotel Talisi

Built circa 1845, the Patterson Log Cabin is an excellent example of “dogtrot” historic cabin design, and was one of the first permanent residences in the Tallassee area. Tallassee has several famous historical residences.

Hotel Talisi

Originally the Woodall Hotel, the Hotel Talisi is the cultural and tourism nucleus of Tallassee’s Historic District. The dining room serves thousands of delicious meals each month to visitors, and rooms are furnished with period antiques.

Mount Vernon Mills

America’s oldest continually operating textile mill, Mount Vernon Mills began as the Tallassee Falls Manufacturing Company in 1844. The mill was used as a Confederate Armory in 1864 for manufacturing the famous Tallassee Carbines.

Fitzpatrick Bridge and Thurlow Dam

At one time the world’s longest curved truss bridge, Fitzpatrick Bridge ties together West and East Tallassee and links Elmore and Tallapoosa Counties.

Thurlow Dam (located on the Tallapoosa River, which flows from nearby Lake Martin) is Alabama Power’s southernmost hydroelectric producer.

Battles for The Armory Civil War Reenactment

The Confederate Armory in Tallassee is the only armory that was never captured or destroyed. Each November, the battles that preserved the Armory are commemorated in one of the region’s most popular reenactments.

The Trophy Room

Tallassee’s natural wildlife museum, The Trophy Room, features animal displays from Africa. It provides a rare opportunity to study large cats, gazelles and other large wild creatures up close in a dramatic exhibit environment.

Mount Vernon Theater

The Mount Vernon, an early 20th century movie theater, is being restored by a community group and will become a community auditorium. The Armory and Theater are historical treasures Tallassee citizens want to preserve.
