Now, more than ever, retirement means new possibilities for retirees. Tuscaloosa County has become a target area for retirees who wish to keep growing, to seek adventure and to have fun. With a mild year-round climate, it’s a golfer’s dream come true and a paradise for those that enjoy boating, fishing and horseback riding.

For seniors who enjoy traveling, many trips are coordinated by the Park and Recreation Authority (PARA), along with other senior activities.

Other pursuits beckon, like opportunities for adult education at our outstanding colleges and other venues. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Alabama (OLLI @ UA), as part of the UA Continuing Studies, boasts over 30 course offerings, weekly bonus course opportunities, field trips and supper club meetings.

While many OLLI @ UA courses are held in the Bryant Conference Center, the program also takes advantage of the resources available at Capstone Village, a continuing care retirement community located on the UA campus. Capstone Village residents have been very involved with the OLLI @ UA program, not only by signing up for memberships, but providing class meeting space and teaching volunteers for courses. This valuable relationship has strengthened the OLLI @ UA program and will continue to do so for years to come.

Opportunities for volunteer service abound with many organizations. FOCUS on Senior Citizens of Tuscaloosa County (a United Way agency) is a comprehensive service organization for those aged 60 and above, although some programs are available to persons aged 55 and above. Its mission is to help senior citizens remain as independent as possible and involve them in a variety of meaningful activities.

Here, retirees find a growing abundance of affordable condominiums, garden homes and retirement/assisted living communities, and appreciate that the crime rate is low, compared to a national average.
