GovernmentResidents and businesses in Glendale are effectively served by a council-manager form of government. The mayor and six council members, elected from each of the city districts, bring to life the city’s vision by formulating policies, approving budgets and levying taxes. A city manager carries out council policies and supervises the day-to-day city operations. The manager also recommends the direction of policies, manages city services and enforces city ordinances and regulations.

Glendale’s government focuses on providing quality services, sound financial management, safe neighborhoods, a strong civic infrastructure and a variety of recreational resources and opportunities. The city also promotes economic development and strives to meet the employment needs of its citizens. The success of Glendale can be attributed to the dynamic partnership the council has with businesses, civic organizations, citizens and city staff. Community involvement is vital in maintaining an effective municipal government and shaping our city’s dynamic future. Our city even offers an innovative, free civic education program - called Glendale University - which provides a foundation for informed citizens, enabling them to positively contribute to our community’s future.

Public safety is a priority and the professional police and fire departments are on the forefront to ensure Glendale’s residents are safe and secure. The 280 full-time sworn police officers have implemented several award-winning programs to better serve and protect the Glendale community. One such program is the Community Action Teams which consist of officers and crime prevention specialists who proactively resolve neighborhood issues. In addition, a comprehensive Speed Reduction Campaign has rallied the community around the slogan, "It’s Our Town, Please Slow Down," resulting in a decrease in speed-related accidents.

GovernmentOver 150 highly-trained and well-equipped firefighters with the Glendale Fire Department sustain a superior fire insurance classification. The city recently dedicated its seventh fire station to meet the public safety needs of an expanding city population. This $2.1 million station also houses the city’s Emergency Operations Center to provide responsive disaster control capabilities to better protect the city.

Additionally, Glendale’s Utilities Department is dedicated to efficiently and effectively providing citizens with an ample supply of quality drinking water. Recent and current expansion projects incorporating innovative technologies at two of our water production facilities will double Glendale’s current water production capacity. And to ensure a never-ending water supply in our desert environment, Glendale has made a commitment to reclaimed water with the expansion of a current reclamation facility and the construction of a second one.

With one of the finest public works departments in Arizona, Glendale provides twice- weekly garbage pickup, recycling services, landfill operations and regular street repairs to maintain the aesthetic integrity of our city.

Because of sound, conservative fiscal policies, Glendale saves our taxpayers’ dollars by having one the highest bond ratings in the country. The excellent condition of the local economy and the city’s financial performance, current debt, capital improvement programs and operating have resulted in this superior rating.
