History in Peoria AZ

History in Peoria

What began as a quiet agricultural town has since boomed into a dynamic metropolitan city. Peoria was established through the vision of William J. Murphy, who saw the potential of the fertile farmlands along the Salt River. Murphy attracted settlers from the east to the land, among them four families from Peoria, Illinois. The town was founded in 1886 and named in honor of the original settlers’ hometown.

Residency in the new community grew, and a school and post office were established by 1889. Peoria continued to grow as a farming community. Town amenities expanded: the first water tank was built in 1894, the Peoria Railroad Depot was established in 1895, and the Peoria Chamber of Commerce was established in 1919, making it the oldest actively operating chamber in Arizona today.
