History

graphicMany of the Rim Country’s first settlers arrived by wagon train in the 1870’s, and the early Town of Payson and the surrounding area soon became populated by gold prospectors, ranchers and settlers. The Town of Payson was founded in 1882; Pine was founded in 1879 and Strawberry was founded in 1864.

While Arizona towns like Tombstone were legendary for their gunfights and hangings, early Payson was noted more for its good-natured nightlife. The region’s heritage of self-reliance, spontaneity and friendliness has remained a hallmark of the Rim Country lifestyle to this day.
