Benton and Saline County include many historical sites to explore. These landmarks, dating from both the city’s and surrounding area’s beginnings, provide a view into a rich past for present-day residents and visitors to enjoy.
The Gann Building, constructed of bauxite from local mines, is the only known structure of its kind in the United States. Built in 1893, it served as the office of Dr. Dewell Gann, Sr., until he donated it to the City of Benton to be used as a library. Now home to the Gann Museum, this bauxite rarity contains an assortment of items exhibiting local history.
The Shoppach House, Benton’s oldest surviving building, was built in 1853. It is believed to have been occupied by both Confederate and Union troops during the Civil War. Restored to its original state, it is open to the public upon special request.
An important part of Benton’s rich history, the Saline County Courthouse, with its landmark clock tower, has been expanded and renovated since its 1902 completion. Its tree-covered square with gazebo and brick-paved Veterans War Memorial is at the center of community life. In election years, it is home to political rallies. Every Christmas, people come to enjoy the festive lights, Christmas tree and displays.
Old River Bridge was the first bridge constructed to launch the replacement of the ferry system. It was built in 1889 and spans the Saline River.
The Hernando DeSoto Trail Marker marks DeSoto’s visit to Saline County in 1541. It is located on the corner of Carpenter and Military streets.

Bauxite Community Hall—located just next door in Bauxite, Arkansas—was erected in 1926 for the employees of the Aluminum Company of America. Not only does this building serve as a reminder of the people who lived and worked in the area, it celebrates the city and its history. The Bauxite Museum displays artifacts and memorabilia illustrating this company town’s unusual past.
Be sure not to miss Benton’s annual Old Fashioned Day at the Courthouse Square on an October weekend. This event includes live entertainment, games and contests, food vendors and a live auction—all blending together the city’s bygone years, its present and its future.
Other exciting events not only include the Chamber of Commerce’s Savor the Flavor and Cajun Feast, but also Downtown Benton’s Easter Egg Hunt and Spook City. The Wally Hall Tournament and Saline Summer Daze make Memorial weekend in Benton very exciting.

The Royal Players, a local community theatre group, performs downtown in a converted movie theatre. Just look for the antique neon Royal Theater sign and movie marquee. Drawing from a large pool of talent in central Arkansas, the Royal Players produce five or six plays per year. Their children’s theatre and workshops round out an entire year of great theatre for all ages in Benton.
