Wellness Into the Future

Don’t underestimate the value of Hometown Employment

With gas prices rising and traffic clogging our Central Arkansas Interstates, the prospect of working at home or at least within a two-to-five mile radius is looking better and better every day. From the mass move to downtown lofts by professionals to the rise in gated, self-contained family communities planned on the fringes of larger urban areas, mid-America is changing.

Saline Memorial Hospital’s (SMH) nurses, physicians, medical technicians, lab assistants, therapists and non-clinical coworkers who are avoiding traffic and high gas prices would probably agree that quality of life may have played a very important role in their decision to work at the hospital.

Work environments are changing to meet the priorities expressed by employees. That may translate into less time spent on the road in route to and from work. These priorities often include more time spent with family and friends as well as a desire to be actively engaged in hometown community activities.

“Salaries and medical technology are comparable to surrounding hospitals, so the desire to be closer to school and the home community is a big employment satisfaction factor among our coworkers,” said Randy Fortner, SMH president and CEO.

As one of the five fastest growing counties in Arkansas, Saline County has seen an increase in young families moving to the community and the hospital has grown over the past 50 years to meet the demand for accessible healthcare.

“Saline Memorial Hospital’s focus is on quality, safe care for its patients as well as increased patient and coworker satisfaction,” said Fortner. “With the patient’s care as our most important emphasis, our coworkers are helping to develop a culture that makes our hospital a very desirable place to apply their professional training.”

The hospital offers opportunities to work in a newly expanded and technologically advanced Emergency Department, a new $9 million, 32,000 square foot Surgery Center, a new Breast Imaging Center, a Total Joint Center, Wound Care Center and a Radiology Suite offering complete out patient diagnostic services. The hospital’s 167 patient beds offer medial care from the birth of a baby to end-of-life hospice care. More than 180 active and consulting physicians work by the side of trained health professionals to provide highly skilled, compassionate and competent care to all patients.
