El Dorado Business and Industry
El Dorado has a diverse mixture of companies that contribute to its economic base, including oil refiners, financial institutions, timber industries, chemical companies, food processing plants, service industries, retailers and governmental agencies.
Although best known for oil, timber and chemical industries, El Dorado also has a solid manufacturing base. The county’s total employment base in manufacturing is 31 percent - the U.S. average is 19 percent.
El Dorado is also a retail trade center for a large portion of south Arkansas and north Louisiana.
Murphy Oil Corporation is a worldwide oil and gas company with headquarters in downtown El Dorado. A $4.5-billion company, Murphy operates refining, marketing and transportation facilities in the U.S. and Great Britain.
MAJOR COMPANIES IN EL DORADO
• Great Lakes Chemical Company, a Chemtura company, produces bromine and brominated products in El Dorado, the company’s largest manufacturing site.
• Lion Oil Company currently processes approximately 55,000 barrels of crude oil each day into gasoline, diesel fuel and asphalt products.
• Deltic Timber Corporation is engaged in the growing and harvesting of timber and the manufacturing and marketing of lumber. In addition to its timber and lumber operations, the company is engaged in real estate development in central Arkansas. Deltic also owns a 50 percent interest in Del-Tin Fiber, the world’s largest medium density fiber board plant.
• Anthony Forest Products is a completely integrated forest products business. The company owns and operates engineered wood laminating plants, lumber and chip mills, and Anthony Log Homes.
• Pilgrim’s Pride, the second largest poultry producer in the world, has a major processing facility located in El Dorado.
• El Dorado is home to Union Power Station-Entegra PowerGroup LLC, the country’s largest merchant power plant.
• The Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission, a state agency, is located in El Dorado.
