El Dorado is governed by a mayor and a city council comprised of eight aldermen. City council meetings are held twice monthly in the Council Chamber at City Hall. Mayoral elections are held every four years, and aldermen are elected every two years.

Police protection for the city is provided by 65 (uniformed and reserve) officers with 27 radio-equipped cars. The El Dorado Police Department also maintains a SWAT Team and Bomb Squad.

Fire protection is available to all city residents and industrial plants outside the city limits. There are more than 50 full-time firefighters operating 10 firefighting units out of four fire stations.

Emergency calls are handled by trained 911 operators and emergency service personnel.

El Dorado and Union County are moving FORWARD

El Dorado’s economic development is important to area citizens. The El Dorado Forward initiative was established in 2006 in an effort to dedicate more than $32 million over the next eight years toward economic growth. Areas of growth include talent, industry and place. One of the primary objectives of this plan is to make El Dorado a regional destination in south Arkansas for entertainment, culture, recreation, living, business, education, healthcare and shopping. El Dorado Forward also calls for a partnership with South Arkansas Community College and the city of El Dorado in the construction of a new community center and student union building for the college. This new facility will allow the area to host regional events and activities not currently available due to the lack of adequate facilities.
