contentsEl Dorado AR Chamberads

Community Introduction

El Dorado is located in the heart of the Timberland region of Arkansas. Here among the pine trees and hardwoods is some of the best deer hunting and bass fishing in the state. El Dorado is the county seat of Union County, the largest county in the state with 1,039 square miles and a population of 45,629 residents.

Known also as “Arkansas’ Original Boomtown,” El Dorado experienced a boom when oil was discovered one mile from town in January 1921. Visitors still experience the wealth of the oil boom, which is reflected in the impressive buildings in the El Dorado Commercial Historic District. Eight buildings are currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

El Dorado is also home to the El Dorado Promise, a unique scholarship program which provides a tuition scholarship to be used at any accredited two or four year educational institution in the U.S. This was made possible by a $50 million gift from Murphy Oil Corporation.

In the past two years, El Dorado voters have approved two initiatives to insure the growth of the community. First, a citywide sales tax was approved that established the El Dorado Forward initiative. This economic development tax will generate over $30 million over eight years. Secondly, residents of the El Dorado School District approved an increased millage to improve school facilities and build a modern, state-of-the-art high school campus.

Tree-lined streets beckon visitors to linger among the shops and eateries downtown and to admire the art deco and classic revival architecture. For those interested in the arts, El Dorado is home to the South Arkansas Arts Center and the South Arkansas Symphony, as well as public art displays and murals. The Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources is located just minutes from El Dorado and explores the history of the oil and brine industry in South Arkansas. El Dorado is a vibrant town with a wealth of recreational, shopping and dining opportunities — take time to experience it all!
