The Greater Fort Smith Region recognizes and embraces the diversity of its more than 300,000 residents. Many houses of worship – including temples, mosques and churchs – are established throughout the area, serving a variety of faiths and denominations. With more than 200 congregations in Fort Smith alone, the faith component of our residents is obvious.
The ministries of the Greater Fort Smith Region are as vast as they are varied, and the region has opened its arms to a multitude of religious traditions and denominations. From the numerous Christian churches; two Catholic chapels; a plethora of ethnic churches including Hispanic, Vietnamese and Korean, the Jewish synagogue, a Buddhist temple and a Muslim mosque, all faiths are welcomed in the Greater Fort Smith Region, which offers a ministry opportunity for all residents.
Large churches – including Harvest Time Tabernacle, Evangel Temple and Immaculate Conception offer a variety of worship services, from the traditional to the contemporary. Smaller chapels around the region offer quaint locations for weddings and other ceremonies, including the Enchanted Wedding Chapel and the Little Wedding Chapel in Fort Smith. The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith also has several faith-based groups and organizations for students attending the college.
Saint Scholastica Monastery in Fort Smith serves as a landmark for the region. Founded in 1879, the towers are visible day and night. Until 1968, the nuns of St. Scholastica ran a boarding school, and until 1994 they ran various hospitals in Arkansas and Missouri. Today, the sisters continue their volunteer work in the region and run an infirmary to care for the sick and aged of the community.
For those who worship daily, weekly or just occasionally, in the Greater Fort Smith Region a place of prayer and fellowship is always close by.
