Part of the Arkansas System of Natural Areas, the 71-acre Baker Prairie is the only part left of a once 5,000-acre tallgrass prairie in this region. Its location within the city limits of Harrison makes it easily accessible. Standing as one of the best outdoor educational resources, Baker Prairie is the site of typical prairie grasses, beautiful wildflowers in certain seasons, five native plant species and three native animal species. The site is also quickly becoming a favorite place for birding enthusiasts.

Operated by the Boone County Historical and Railroad Society, the Boone County Heritage Museum is teeming with a number of exhibits and collections depicting the area’s local history. Among the features are the Heritage Room, Railroad Room, JoAnn Forrest Genealogy Room, the War Room and a favorite among visitors, the Henry Starr exhibit.

One of the very few remaining unpolluted, free-flowing rivers in the lower 48, the Buffalo National River makes up 135 miles of the 150-mile river. Take a drive near the River through the gorgeous scenery of the area or engage in some active recreation, as the river is perfect for canoeing, kayaking, rafting or boating. Take advantage of the over 100 miles of hiking trails or enjoy bird watching, wildlife viewing, camping, fishing, horseback riding and hunting. Interpretive programs are also available.

Nestled along U.S. Highway 65, a quick 30-minute drive from Harrison, Hurricane River Cave stands as one of the most unique of its kind in the U.S. Guests are offered a guided tour along a level ancient underground riverbend, home to such beautiful features as cave popcorn, canopies, rimstone dams, rare shields and much more. The latest addition to the Cave’s offerings includes a tour of the east passage—perfect for the visitor interested in a real caving experience.

Opened in 2001, the Marine Corps Legacy Museum is devoted to preserving the rich heritage of the U.S. Marine Corps. Follow the “Time Line” format of items and information on everything from the early history of the Corps, Marine Aviation and Women in Marines to Battle Histories of the U.S. Marines and Marine Corps Music—among other fantastic features. MCLM also offers a number of educational outreach programs to people of all ages.

Guided tours of two of the state’s most impressive caverns—Mystic Caverns and Crystal Dome Caverns—are available in one location, just eight miles south of Harrison.
