Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center A Tradition of Quality Originally founded in 1925, Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center has been the healthcare leader in the River Valley for more than 80 years. The medical center has grown to an 11-acre campus and is licensed as a 170-bed acute care facility. Saint Mary’s has continued to grow, expand and add new services to meet the needs of the communities it serves.
Saint Mary’s meets the challenges of providing quality healthcare in a climate of ever-increasing demands with a committed staff of nearly 800, strong community support and true belief in its mission. The hospital consistently scores among the nation’s top hospitals in quality rankings, and it has received quality awards for patient care in both 2006 and 2007.
Today Saint Mary’s, which is accredited by the Joint Commission and owned by Capella Healthcare, has a medical staff of more than 70 active physicians representing 30 medical specialties. Some of its key services include:
• 24-hour, physician-staffed emergency services
• cardiac catheterization and echocardiogram services
• cardiopulmonary and respiratory services
• comprehensive cancer treatment center
• CT scanning
• diagnostic and vascular ultrasound
• diagnostic radiology
• home health services
• hyperbaric oxygen therapy and wound care management services
• inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services

Within the last two years, Saint Mary’s has undergone significant capital improvements and developments in patient care.
The most visible recent development has been the completion of the renovated and expanded Emergency Department. This 10,200-square-foot facility features an inviting reception area, new exam and trauma rooms and a dedicated ambulance entrance. Additionally, there is a new admitting area, physicians’ station and centralized nursing station equipped with a highly advanced monitoring system. All exam rooms are equipped with non-invasive cardiac monitoring equipment.
In 2007 alone, Saint Mary’s Emergency Department staff cared for 21,468 patients. The department’s entrance is located on the “C” Street side of the hospital campus; special parking for emergency patients and guests is available nearby.
Major improvements have also stretched into other areas of the hospital. A highly advanced “picture archiving and communication system” (PACS) was implemented in 2007. This system improves imaging processes while automating many of the manually intensive film-based processes.
Traditionally, images used in procedures such as ultrasound, CT scanning, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and nuclear medicine are captured by a scanning device, developed onto film, viewed on light boxes, and after a diagnosis, stored in file folders. Now, instead of waiting for hard copies of these images and reports to be delivered, physicians and staff can securely access them via computer.
“Fearless and Fabulous” is Saint Mary’s women’s health initiative designed to promote better breast health and assist in the fight against breast cancer. More than 2,800 women had mammograms at Saint Mary’s in 2007, and community response to the program has been impressive.
Beyond its 170-bed, acute-care main campus on West Main, Saint Mary’s is supported by several area facilities that, together, create a comprehensive healthcare network. The Millard-Henry (MH) Clinic, located at 101 Skyline Drive, has served the Russellville area since 1945. Other MH Clinics are conveniently located in the nearby communities of Dover and Atkins.
Adjacent to the Skyline location is the new 16,000-square-foot Millard-Henry OB/GYN and Surgery Clinic. Additionally, Valley Health Services in Hector offers substantial healthcare services for those in rural northeastern Pope County. For more information about clinic services, call Millard-Henry at 479-968-2345.
Working hand-in-hand for a healthier community, Saint Mary’s also networks with the Saint Mary’s Wellness/Fitness Center, a 30,000-square-foot facility with an indoor track, basketball court, racquetball courts and full line of exercise and weight training equipment. Members can enjoy a variety of classes or even work with a personal trainer. Childcare is also available. Call 479-968-7979 for more information.
Another off-campus resource is Saint Mary’s Outpatient Therapy Center. The Outpatient Therapy Center strives to enable rehabilitation patients to return to their highest level of health and function possible through physical, occupational and/or speech therapy. As a hospital based program, therapy is exempt from the Medicare Therapy Cap. The center also offers a diabetes self-management program recognized by the American Diabetes Association. For more information, call 479-968-3733.
Along with being one of the largest employers in the River Valley, Saint Mary’s is strongly committed to promoting community wellness. Community based seminars and screenings are scheduled throughout the year and cover a variety of current health topics. New residents in the area may find particularly helpful the hospital’s physician referral line. For more information, call 479-964-9355.
Some of Saint Mary’s community programs are the Vintage Club for seniors, SafeSitters childcare education classes and prenatal and sibling education classes. Numerous support groups, special events, screenings and volunteer opportunities are available throughout the year. Saint Mary’s boasts a volunteer auxiliary of almost 80 members who collectively gave over 16,000 hours of service in 2007. This dedicated and enthusiastic team provides invaluable services to the hospital and community and is always looking for energetic new members.
