Education is important to the community of Apple Valley. Our outstanding school system has grown from a one-room schoolhouse to a high-tech educational system, thanks to Apple Valley residents who take a great interest in their schools. Apple Valley’s education system shines with nationally recognized private and public educational institutions.
The Apple Valley Unified School District offers outstanding educational opportunities to our students through a wide range of programs. The district’s website is www.avusd.org.
The Lewis Center for Educational Research is an exceptional educational facility located in Apple Valley. Since opening in 1990, the Lewis Center continues to provide hands-on instructional programs for elementary, middle and high school students throughout our local communities and the nation.
The Lewis Center also operates the Academy for Academic Excellence, a K-12 charter school. Opened in 1997, The Lewis Center (the only facility of its kind in the country) has programs at two Apple Valley campuses — the original campus as well as a new 150-acre campus in the Narrows along the Mojave River — and serves over 570 students.
The Lewis Center works in conjunction with NASA and JPL to enable elementary through high school students around the country to operate a 34-meter radio telescope located in Goldstone, California. The program’s success is due, in part, to Apple Valley’s clear, cloudless nights and pollution free air. Known as GAVRT (Goldstone Apple Valley Radio Telescope), the program also allows students to carry out scientific projects and experiments over the Internet.
The Lewis Center is also home to a T-40 Simulator that simulates the T-39 Saberliner jet. Students can take classes in aerodynamics and operate the simulator.
Additionally, The Center has programs in archaeology, California Gold Rush history, the solar system, solar energy and meteorology, as well as monthly observatory viewing at the optical observatory on the original campus. The Lewis Center’s web site is www.lewiscenter.org.
Other private K-12 schools in the area include: Apple Valley Christian School, Mojave Christian School, St. Mary’s Regional Catholic School, Valley Christian School and St. Timothy’s Episcopal School.
