WILD ARCADIA
Because Arcadia is a San Gabriel Mountains foothill community, and because we back up to some of the most rugged mountains in the world and have encroached on the domain of many wild animals, Arcadia is home to many wild species, making life in our fair city a little more exciting and complicated.
Seen roaming our streets, fences, rooftops, alleys, lawns, swimming in our pools, climbing our trees, sitting on our telephone poles and power lines, flying our skies and lounging on our patios are possums, raccoons, snakes, parrots, peacocks, owls, hawks, deer, bears, bobcats, mountain lions, coyotes and many, many species of birds, rodents, rabbits and even an occasional fox and turkey vulture. This is not to frighten our residents and visitors, but to add to the delight and reaffirm that we all still share this planet with other, though different, species and don’t need to go far to observe them.
FAMOUS ARCADIA
Most recently, in 2010 and 2011, Luck is being filmed in Arcadia at Santa Anita Park, home of So Cal’s premier thoroughbred racing facility. The film Luck for HBO is written and produced by David Milch and directed by Michael Mann. Projected to be released in early 2011, it stars Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte and is based on trainer Julio Canani who won some important races in the 1990s with Martial Law. Many local racetrack aficionados will probably recognize themselves in Luck. Other movies have been filmed in Arcadia over the last 80 years, including Tarzan, Seabiscuit and Pink Lightning.
ARCADIA, THE INTERNATIONAL CITY OF ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES
Because of Arcadia’s diversity in population, and large Asian/Latino presence accounting for about 65 percent of the population, Arcadia enjoys a diverse residential base. The commercial base—from a large regional mall to small boutiques—has elevated Arcadia to third in the San Gabriel Valley for our large number of business establishments, according to former LAEDC Economist Jack Kyser.
Other amenities include the Arcadia Unified School District, one of the most highly regarded in the state; high quality medical services; an excellent assortment of recreation and leisure activities; Santa Anita Racetrack and the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden.
