The city of Atwater encompasses 20 park sites, with amenities ranging from ball fields, playground equipment and tennis courts to picnic areas, trails, horseshoe pits and open spaces perfect for rest and relaxation. Well-maintained facilities within the city include Osborn Park’s Skateboard Park, a BMX Track at Veterans Park and the Castle Youth Center, which houses a multi-use gymnasium.

The community has exceptional boating and fishing destinations, with Lakes McClure and McSwain found just to the east. Regarded as some of the best fishing lakes in the state, Lakes McClure and McSwain are home to such fish species as rainbow trout, black bass, spotted bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish, salmon and shad. In addition, the lakes are part of a stocking program, which brings trout, king salmon and Florida largemouth bass to the area. Further sites for fishing and boating, as well as land activities such as camping, picnicking and wildlife viewing, include the San Luis Reservoir, George J. Hatfield and McConnell State Recreation Areas.

Golf enthusiasts have ready access to the city’s Rancho Del Rey Golf Course. Designed by Bob E. Baldock, this public 18-hole course offers plenty of challenge for golfers of all skill levels. Also on-site is a fully equipped pro shop and the Handi-Cap Café, great for a bite to eat after a morning of play. What’s more, golfers are afforded the chance to hone their skills at the 9-Iron Practice Center, a full-service practice facility located between Atwater and Merced that also offers volleyball, batting cages and other family activities. Additional nearby courses include the Stevinson Ranch Course in Stevinson and Diablo Grande Winery and Resort’s Golf Course in Patterson.

And for those looking to knock down some pins, Atwater is home to such prime bowling alleys as Bellevue Bowl and Castle Lanes. These facilities provide fun for the whole family to enjoy.
