Atwater’s excellent location places it within reach of several modes of transportation, making both commuter and business-related travel in the area, and nationwide, quick and efficient. Established highway systems winding in and around the city include State Highways 99 and 140, with Interstate 5 situated approximately 40 miles to the west of Atwater.
Public transportation is available through Merced County Transit’s THE BUS, a countywide transit provider offering regularly scheduled fixed routes and Dial-A-Ride services Monday through Saturday. THE BUS stands as the sole public transportation service provider for all of Merced County, and has established three fixed bus routes through Atwater—Routes 7, 8 and 16. Senior citizens aged 60 and older, handicapped persons and those riders without access to the scheduled fixed bus routes can take advantage of the Dial-A-Ride services, which can be scheduled by contacting THE BUS at (800) 345-3111.
General aviation, private and corporate jet services can be found through Atwater’s Castle Airport, while commercial service can be accessed through Merced Municipal Airport. Further options for affordable commuter transit include daily Greyhound bus service, along with Amtrak commuter rail service, both located in neighboring Merced.
Businesses in the area are afforded the opportunity to utilize rail services through the Southern/ Union Pacific Railroad and Burlington Santa Fe Railroad, along with water transportation via the Port of Stockton (within 60 miles) and the Port of Oakland (within 100 miles).
