Enjoying the Great Outdoors

Nature lovers will delight in the area’s hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities at Afton Canyon, where the river reappears after flowing underground for more than 50 miles. Other areas of interest include Amboy Crater, which offers a volcanic cinder cone, while Black Canyon shows off early man’s artistic nature through petroglyphs carved into the canyon walls.

Rainbow Basin, too, reveals colorful fossils of ancient mammals and is located just outside the Barstow city limits. For those willing to take a day trip, the Mojave National Preserve, Joshua Tree National Park and Mitchell Caverns State Recreation Area are all within an approximate two-hour drive. Death Valley National Park – the largest in the national park system outside Alaska – lies 180 miles north.

In addition to the natural wonders of the area, Barstow is committed to providing residents with plenty of recreational opportunities for their enjoyment. Seven ballparks, 12 play areas, an outdoor pool, one golf course and several tennis courts are available for use throughout the city.

Barstow also maintains and operates a community center that has a gym, weight room, arts and crafts facilities, handball and racquetball courts, and aerobics and sauna rooms.

As if this was not enough, the Robert A. Sessions Sportspark is also available for numerous activities including: baseball, soccer, volleyball, batting cages, and in-line roller hockey.

Many adult and youth activities are available through the Barstow Park & Recreation District. Various sports leagues for all ages are organized throughout the year. The District also provides programs for those who prefer less strenuous activities.

The areas surrounding Barstow provide numerous outdoor activities including camping, hunting, off-roading, desert exploring and viewing of seasonal wild flowers, geological points of interest and petroglyphs. This is part of living in the California sun. Opportunities for enjoying the great outdoors are abundant and Barstow works hard to make sure these opportunities are available to everyone.
