Barstow Government
Incorporated in 1947, Barstow is a general law city run by a mayor and four-member city council; all members of the city council are elected by the general public and serve four-year terms. The city council appoints a city manager who provides leadership to the council. The city council is responsible for establishing city policies, enacting laws, deciding on issues that affect the community, and helping to develop programs that will benefit the overall economic and social well-being of the city.
The Barstow Police Department serves the community with approximately 60 personnel on staff to protect the public and maintain a superior quality of life for its residents. The department consists of three divisions: Patrol, Administrative and Records. All three divisions work together to ensure a safe and prosperous city for residents and visitors.
The Barstow Fire Protection District also works around the clock to ensure a safe city. Serving Barstow and the surrounding unincorporated areas, the fire district has a variety of equipment and services available for use in emergency and educational situations. In addition to its firefighting services, the fire district also provides paramedic, rescue and fire prevention services.
The city’s portion of the retail tax is one percent while both transportation and public safety receive .5 percent each. When added to the state sales tax, consumers pay a total of 7.75 percent to maintain these civil services.
The city provides sewer service; Southern California Water Company delivers water; Southern California Edison Company turns on the electricity; and Southwest Gas Corporation pipes in natural gas. Telephone service is provided by Verizon while Time Warner Cable covers cable needs.
