education

From preschool to graduate studies, education remains at the forefront of the Berkeley community. Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) is dedicated to providing the finest in educational programming. The public district is comprised of three early childhood centers, 11 elementary schools, three middle schools and one high school, which are all staffed by highly qualified and dedicated faculty members and staff. Among its unique programs are three magnet-designated facilities: the Berkeley Technology Academy (a continuation high school diploma program), the Berkeley Independent Study Program (an alternative learning program) and the Berkeley Adult School, which offers ESL courses, career and technical education, adult secondary education, lifelong learning classes, community interest classes and special Saturday workshops. BUSD also offers opportunities for Advanced Placement (AP) classes, special education and active after-school programming.

In addition to the public schools available in Berkeley are a number of parochial and private institutions. A notable private school in the area is The Academy, a co-educational, K-8 facility educating approximately 120 motivated students. The Academy offers a rigorous, innovative curriculum conducive to student success, both academically and personally. Supporting the school’s core curriculum are opportunities to learn French or Latin, explore the arts and participate in a host of after-school enrichment and summertime programs.

higher education

College-bound students have two outstanding options right in town. Many begin their path at Berkeley City College (BCC) (formerly Vista Community College), a two-year community college offering a state-of-the-art campus in the heart of Berkeley. BCC provides opportunities to complete two-year degrees, professional certificates and four-year university transfer programs, while also offering dual credit options for high school students and enrichment courses for lifelong learners.

The community is also home to the flagship campus of the University of California. A block-and-a-half away from BCC is UC Berkeley, an outstanding public university that continuously earns national rankings for its undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The institution is recognized not only for its academic triumphs but also for its research division, which is noted as one of the finest in the world.
