Nurse Alta Bates founded Alta Bates Hospital in 1905. Since that time the hospital has continually grown with the community and now has expanded its services by the recent merger with Sutter Health. The new health organization's mission is to enhance the health and well being of people in the communities they serve through compassion and excellence.

Alta Bates Summit Medical Center has three campuses. The Ashby and Herrick Campus are located in Berkeley. The Ashby Campus is home to Alta Bates hospital, a 555-bed medical center, 2,700 employees and 900 physicians on staff. Services, include: the family birth center, women's & infants services, comprehensive cancer center, heart and vascular services, occupational health, rehabilitation services 24-hour emergency center, burn center, bone marrow and kidney transplant programs and mental health services. Their mission is to provide high quality, accessible, affordable care in a comfortable setting for families.
