Bring sweaters and jackets to protect against the cool mornings and evenings. (Locals dress in layers). The ocean temperature can be chilly.
There are no street addresses in the village of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Locations are described as north or south of Ocean Avenue and on the east or west side of the street. West is always toward the beach. Outside of the one-square-mile of the village there are street addresses.
Comfortable walking shoes are a must. (A city ordinance outlaws high heels!)
Dress is usually casual and ties are seldom required.
Parking lots can be found at the Sunset Center and the Carmel Plaza. Free parking is located at Vista Lobos Park (3rd Avenue & Torres Street). Free street parking is also available but be aware--parking laws and time limits are enforced.
Carmel has an outstanding library and visitors may obtain a temporary card for a monthly fee. Call 831-624-4629.
Many of our shops, galleries, boutiques and restaurants are located in secluded courtyards - a self-guided walking tour of courtyards is available at the Carmel Visitor Information Center.
Dogs are welcome in many inns and restaurants. Go to www.carmelcalifornia.org for a listing.
