Desert Hot Springs Attractions
Hot Springs Park, an educational park, which celebrates the City’s namesake hot water and pristine drinking water, offers visitors and local residents the opportunity to view the actual progression of groundwater available to the community and to gain information about the earthquake faults in the area.
Cabot Yerxa, who was one of the original homesteaders in 1913, and recognized as discovering the Desert Hot Springs groundwater, began construction on his Hopi-inspired Pueblo in 1941. Cabot’s Pueblo Museum, a Riverside County Point of Historic Interest, and the Pueblo Gallery Art Exhibitions are open on weekends.
In 1977, sculptor Peter Toth carved “Waokiye,” a 43’ tall Indian monument, from a 750-year-old Sequoia Redwood tree which was struck by lightning and donated to the Museum by the Department of Forestry.
In 1932, L.W. Coffee was coaxed by Cabot Yerxa to move in to develop and sell land. The first streets were laid out in 1941 and Mr. Coffee started selling lots about the same time. July 12, 1941, L.W. Coffee claimed to be the originator, founder, and developer of Desert Hot Springs.
In addition to the resorts, attractions and natural springs in Desert Hot Springs, the area has many natural and man-made diversions. (Mount San Jacinto State Park has hundreds of miles of hiking trails and bridle paths where hikers can safely reach the 10,815-foot peak of Mount San Jacinto. Joshua Tree National Park is an 870-square-mile nature and wildlife sanctuary with Joshua Tree forests, rugged mountains and Indian caves. Agua Caliente Indian Canyons offers hiking, bridle paths and unusually fine bird-watching opportunities.)
