The Marine Corps Air Station-Miramar is one of the largest employers in the I-15 Diamond Gateway, with more than 10,000 service and 1,000 civilian members on-site. MCAS Miramar and the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing support Marine and Naval aviation missions worldwide.
MCAS Miramar plays a vital role in the Diamond Gateway economy, but it’s much more than just a large employer. It’s also a good neighbor.
The air station’s “Hands Across the Fences” community relations philosophy contributes to the quality of life in Miramar and neighboring communities on a daily basis. Air station residents and employees participate in volunteer activities and provide speakers, displays and color guards throughout the area. The air station also offers tours for residents twice each month, and hosts a dozen Educators’ Workshops per year.
MCAS Miramar is an enthusiastic participant in the San Diego Unified School District’s Partnerships in Education program, which helps improve student achievement. Marines share their technical and leadership skills with students in a variety of ways — participating in exhibitions and interview panels, helping with sporting events and allowing students to “shadow” them as they perform their jobs.
The air station also offers educational opportunities for its own residents, providing on-site classes and testing. The Miramar Education Center also supplies information on various college and university programs.
The excellent 3rd Military Aircraft Wing Band, composed entirely of combat-trained Marines, has delighted residents at home and abroad for years. It has performed dozens of concerts in the Persian Gulf, and accompanied the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing when it was deployed during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. In May 2003, the 3rd MAW Band performed in one of Saddam Hussein’s palaces, becoming the first U.S. military band to perform in Iraq.
The air station also has an on-site aviation history museum, and sponsors a popular free air show each fall.
