Eastern Madera County and its unincorporated communities are governed
by a five-member Board of Supervisors. An appointed Planning Commission
handles land-use matters, with appeals to their decisions falling under
the Board of Supervisors’ responsibility. A satellite government
center is located at Bass Lake.
Our current county retail sales tax total is 7.75 percent, with 6.25 percent
going to the state, 1 percent to city and county governments and 0.5 percent
set aside to address local transportation and road needs.
The Madera County Sheriff’s deputies, based at the government center
Bass Lake, and California Highway Patrol officers provide law enforcement
protection for the area. The United States Forest Services supplemental
officers supervise the Bass Lake campgrounds.
Similarly, the paid staff at the Madera County Fire Department handles
basic fire fighting coverage. The California Department of Forestry and
Fire Protection, the United States Forest Service, and many corps of trained
volunteers are also on stand-by during forest fire threats. Ahwahnee,
Bass Lake, Cedar Valley, Coarsegold, Fish Camp, North Fork, Rancheria,
Raymond, Oakhurst, and Yosemite Lakes Parks each sponsor volunteer fire
stations for their residents.
