El Monte Transportation

Local air travel is provided by the county-operated El Monte Airport, one of the country’s 100 busiest small airports.

The county airport is utilized by both residents and businesses for general aviation purposes.

Spanning over 3,425 acres, the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) provides national and international flights for travelers and business ventures. Last year, over 61 million people traversed through the airport, which ranks as the world’s fifth busiest passenger airport and eleventh in air cargo weight transported. Transportation available at LAX include airport bus service, shuttle van service, local bus lines, light rail, rental cars and taxi cabs. In addition, the LAX FlyAway bus service affords service between LAX and Van Nuys Bus Terminal, Union Station and Westwood/UCLA, and a shuttle bus offers a connection between LAX and the Metro’s Green Line Light Rail.

Operated by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the Los Angeles County Metro Rail is a mass transit rail system offering rail transport along five rail lines. Metro Rail is comprised of three light rail lines and two rapid transit subway lines, adding up to more than 73 miles of rail line that run through 62 stations and commute nearly 277,000 daily weekday boardings.

Established in 1988, and now the second largest fixed-route public transit provider in Southern California, Foothill Transit offers riders bus service to San Gabriel Valley and Pomona Valley. Covering 327 square miles in the region and serving approximately 16 million commuters annually, Foothill Transit operates 35 fixed-route local, express and rail feeder lines in Southern California.

On top of the provider’s regular daily offerings, it also affords shuttle service to the majority of events at the Rose Bowl from the Parsons Corporation facility on Walnut Street and Fair Oaks Avenue in Pasadena. Foothill Transit is in the midst of an environmentally-friendly movement. In 2002, the provider began switching over to the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) powered buses. Currently, 117 CNG buses are being put to use, with plans to have a complete CNG bus fleet by 2011.
