
Residents located in El Monte and South El Monte are both served by progressive, responsive governments, offering a wealth of services and programs designed to continually improve the quality of life in the communities.

The city of El Monte is comprised of a mayor and city council who are responsible for managing local government services. The city provides its residents with a variety of services including Building Services, Housing Rehabilitation Services, Permits and Licenses, Public Safety Services, Public Works Services and Water Services. Public safety is enforced by the El Monte Police Department, which is comprised of 150 sworn officers and 77 civilian staff members.
A mayor and four city council members make up the governing body of the city of South El Monte. The mayor is elected at large to a two-year term, while the four council members are also elected at large to a four-year term. Regular city council meetings are held the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 6:30 in the Council Chambers at City Hall. The city of South El Monte receives law enforcement services from the County of Los Angeles’ Temple Station. Temple Station patrols an area of 66 square miles and serves the public safety needs of approximately 200,000 residents in the region.
Both El Monte and South El Monte are benefited by the services of the expansive Los Angeles County Fire Department.
