Business and Industry

Fremont is the perfect setting for commerce and offers key advantages that make it an attractive place to do business. Its location in the Bay Area and Silicon Valley is ideal. The area offers great transportation, available land and property at an affordable price, an excellent quality of life and residents with high average income. Fremont is a prime location for any type of business, whether it is high-tech, office or industrial.

In 1995, Fortune magazine named the San Francisco Bay Area the “Best Region in the Country for Business,” and it still holds true today. Fortune noted the quality of life, high concentration of intellectuals, entrepreneurs and proximity to the rapidly growing Pacific Rim economy. The magazine also credited San Jose and Silicon Valley for their technology, San Francisco for its banking and finances and Oakland for being “the region’s industrial engine room.” These local area benefits are certainly contributing factors in Fremont’s continuing growth.

At one time, Fremont was an agricultural center – now, it thrives on high-tech businesses from Silicon Valley and San Francisco, bringing thousands of new jobs in the areas of research and development, biotechnology, marketing, sales, assembly and manufacturing.

The design and construction industry influences every aspect of Fremont’s built environment, from sensitivity to historically significant buildings in Niles, Irvington and Centerville to development of strategically urban centers in the downtown and in south Fremont near the new Warm Springs BART station. The architect/contractor team effectively improves the quality of life by considering key factors such as safety, health, schools, traffic, the surrounding environment, economic development and a sense of community.

Fremont has a highly skilled and educated workforce located close to labor pools. Local educational facilities provide job training in emerging and basic industry skills. Many workers have some college education, and a high percentage have bachelor’s or graduate degrees. Even though the largest numbers of jobs in the city are in manufacturing, much of the employed population is in management, professional specialties, technical, sales or administrative support.

The city of Fremont has expedited and eased the business development process, and has created a reputation as being helpful and friendly to business. The city has a certified Environmental Impact Report for the General Plan, assuring that most industrial and commercial projects will be “pre-cleared” for environmental review of cumulative impacts. This results in a significantly shorter review process. Fremont also has a One-Stop Permit Center and a Rapid Response Team to cut permit issuance time for customers with specialized needs.
