Called the “Heart of the Bay” in view of its central position in the San Francisco Bay Area, Hayward’s location is among its greatest assets. In addition to the city’s population of 150,000, more than 3.5 million Californians live within a 30-mile radius and have easy access to Hayward via freeway, rail, bus and aircraft – greatly increasing the customer and employment base.
The city has the convenience of freeway access to all the major Bay Area markets. Hayward is 25 miles south of San Francisco via U.S. Highway 101 and California State Route 92, 26 miles north of San Jose by way of Interstate 880 and 14 miles south of Oakland through Interstates 880 and 580. These highways, plus California State Route 238 and the Hayward-San Mateo Bridge, provide commuters and businesses with a link not only to these major markets, but also to vital transportation hubs such as international airports and ports.

The city’s close proximity to the Port of Oakland places it in a strategic position for international business opportunities. Union Pacific Railroad lines have a direct route through Hayward, offering transcontinental service for business and industry. Residents and visitors take advantage of commuter rail lines via Amtrak’s Capitol Corridor line, which runs from Auburn to the Silicon Valley, and two Bay Area Rapid Transit light rail stations.
Commuters also have access to the AC Transit and SAMTrans bus networks to reach Bay Area destinations.
The Hayward Executive Airport is a general aviation facility housing more than 300 aircraft including private, charter, recreational, business and corporate planes. Aviation services include fueling, flight training, rental, avionics sales, maintenance, hanger and tie-down and leasing opportunities. Major passenger and cargo travel is available through three regional international airports – Oakland, San Francisco and Mineta San Jose.
