Residents and visitors to Indian Wells will find they have a plethora of choices when it comes to parks and recreational opportunities.

For adult Indian Wells residents, the Joslyn Cove Senior Center provides a number of cultural, educational, recreational and social activities that enable seniors to keep their independence and health.

Recreational offerings range from art to music to dance to computer skills to foreign language.

The center also provides numerous social services, such as legal assistance, insurance counseling, health screening and referrals. Supported by the city of Indian Wells, many of the center’s programs are available free of charge.

Much of the recreation in Indian Wells focuses on outdoor life.

For example, the Indian Wells area is a mecca for hiking enthusiasts, with trails that range from two to six miles featuring elevation gains of as much as 800 feet.

There is the Desert Museum Trail, a steep, rocky trail in downtown Palm Springs, the Earl Henderson Trail, which traverses the west side of Smoketree Mountain, the Araby Trail, which passes through a shallow mountain pass and the Cactus Spring Trail, located off Highway 74.

Other outdoor destination points include the Coachella Valley Wild Bird Center, the primary mission of which is to rehabilitate and release wild birds; and the Lake Cahuilla Recreation Area, which offers camping, hiking, fishing, picnicking and swimming.

There are also a number of guided tours, hikes and bicycle rides geared to the area’s various outdoor recreational attractions.

For the health-conscious looking to be pampered, the community offers a number of choices, such as the Agua Serena Spa at the Hyatt Grand Champions Resort, the Spa Esmeralda at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort, THE WELL Spa at Miramonte Resort and In-Room Spa Services at the Indian Wells Resort Hotel.

One of the most popular recreational activities in Indian Wells is golf. The Indian Wells Golf Resort has recently undergone a facelift in an effort to continue to be a major golf destination for pros and amateurs alike. In November of 2006, the facility’s Celebrity Course, designed by Clive Clark, opened to strong reviews, with an emphasis placed on its playability, diversity and challenges.

Accentuating the world-class designed course are its mountain views, waterways, gardens and waterfalls.

The Indian Wells Golf Resort’s Player’s Course is scheduled to open in November of 2007. The course, engineered by prominent architect John Fought, will be distinct from the Celebrity Course by highlighting dynamic bunkering, ample fairway corridors and swaying topography. The upgrading will help keep The Indian Wells Golf Resort, which won Golf Digest’s coveted “Best Places to Play” Gold Medal in 2004-2005, in the spotlight.
