La Cañada Flintridge – For all but the three years I spent living in a fraternity house 15 miles away, this community has been my home. What a unique and special place to grow up (although most of us didn’t fully appreciate it at the time!), work, raise a family, volunteer and enjoy life in a naturally beautiful, semi-rural setting just a short drive from one of the world’s great cities.
I have witnessed firsthand the tremendous financial and personal sacrifices people make to move into our community – usually for our outstanding public schools – but also because of our small-town atmosphere, quiet and safe neighborhoods and understated affluence. The person next to you in line at the grocery store, coaching your child’s soccer team or selling cookies at a school fundraiser might be a captain of industry, entertainment mogul or world-famous surgeon, but you would never know it. La Cañadans are simply good, hardworking, unpretentious people.

2012 marks the centennial anniversary of the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce & Community Association. For 100 years, the Chamber has greatly influenced and contributed to our community’s unsurpassed quality of life. This year, your Chamber Directors, talented and friendly staff and enthusiastic Ambassadors are rededicating ourselves to assisting and supporting the business community during these difficult economic times. We stand ready to help our local retail merchants and service businesses with marketing opportunities, City/business ombudsman assistance, networking mixers, the Business Expo and legislative advocacy. Over the years, the Chamber has been a strong advocate of local business issues and concerns and has been successful communicating those concerns to our City leadership and staff. Working cooperatively with the City, the Chamber has successfully encouraged a more empathetic, “customer friendly” approach to responsible business support and development. Some business-related fees have been reduced, restrictions have been relaxed and processes have been streamlined. Good business/City relations makes perfect sense, as does patronizing our local businesses whenever you can. After all, the City receives one percent of all retail sales generated within La Cañada Flintridge. Last year, that represented over $2,100,000, or almost 19 percent of the City’s total general fund revenue! And philanthropically, our local businesses are among the most generous supporters of our schools, charities and community organizations.
The Chamber is also tightly woven in the rich, social fabric of our community. Fiesta Days & Parade over Memorial Day weekend, Festival in Lights, Miss La Cañada Flintridge, Men About Town, the weekly Farmers Market, monthly mixers, student intern/scholarship programs – all Chamber-produced events coordinated by your Chamber staff and hardworking volunteers.
For those businesses and residents who are currently Chamber members, I thank you! For those that aren’t, please seriously consider joining us and getting involved. Check out our website, www.LaCanadaFlintridge.com, and follow us on Facebook. Please give us a call at 818-790-4289 for further information. Native, newcomer or somewhere in between, I guarantee you that the benefits of your membership investment will reap huge dividends – tangible and intangible – and enhance your community as well.
