Lakewood's Recreation and Community Services Department offers a wide variety of programs and services for residents.

There are ten parks in Lakewood spread throughout the city. Eight of the parks offer supervised activities throughout the year, including after school programs for youth.

Many special interest classes are offered annually, along with a complete youth and adult sports program. The park system also boasts two swimming pools. A program of recreational swimming, lessons, competition, and special events is offered from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The city also offers a popular Junior Life Guard Program during summer months.

Park facilities offer an array of active recreation oppor-tunities. The parks are open year round (closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas) and adjust activities and programs to meet seasonal changes.

Park facilities (activity rooms, picnic shelters, baseball/softball diamonds and basketball/tennis courts) are available to the public. Some facilities require a reservation for group use. graphic

The Weingart Senior Center is home to service programs, including a daily lunch program. The center offers recreational opportunities as well as a variety of human and social services. The Burns Community Center offers additional social service programs, including DASH transit (Lakewood's special transportation service).

The Lakewood Youth Center is the hub of Lakewood's teen programs, including the popular Totally Friday Night events. Special programs, such as the Youth Job Fair, Teens in Lakewood Care, and Lakewood Teen Board, are among the many programs that foster community involvement and volunteerism among Lakewood teens. graphic

Lakewood Youth Sports (LYS) leagues provide organized sports for youth ages 6 through 17. Baseball, softball, football, volleyball, tennis, and basketball are offered seasonally. The organization and rules of LYS have been designed to emphasize sportsmanship and participation by everyone. All teams are coached by dedicated Lakewood volunteers (as they have been since 1957).
