For those pursuing higher education, Lakewood is within easy access of a number of colleges and universities, including California State University in Long Beach; Long Beach City College; and Cerritos College.

Cerritos College, founded in 1956, offers degrees and certificates in 150 areas of study. It is recognized by business and industry leaders as the most technologically advanced community college in California. Cerritos College currently serves the academic needs of 22,000 students; each year more than 1,200 students successfully complete their course of study.
