The Bob Hope Classic

What Defines a Classic?

A typical or traditional event, especially one that is considered to be highly prestigious or the most important of its kind.

For more than 50 years, the Bob Hope Classic has been a mainstay on the PGA TOUR’s West Coast Swing circuit. This event is the only five-day, four-course tournament on the professional tour. Since 1960, exciting professional golfers, fun-loving celebrities and eager amateurs have come together to play on the desert’s finest courses in the majestic surroundings of the Coachella Valley. The “Hope” is a tradition that unofficially kicks off the local New Year’s social and events “season,” while at the same time providing millions of dollars to numerous worthy charities.

The City of La Quinta will for the first time ever be host city for all four tournament courses: SilverRock, La Quinta Country Club and the Nicklaus Private, and Palmer Private courses at PGA West. Coachella Valley residents and visitors can enjoy it all in La Quinta—professional golf, celebrity antics, comfortable accommodations, relaxing spas, great restaurants and world-class shopping. The Palmer Private will serve as the tournament’s host course and site for corporate hospitality; a spectator fun zone known as the Classic Hope Square; and, of course, great PGA TOUR golf. Fans have hailed the Bob Hope Classic as one of the most popular professional golf tournaments every year, and 2010 will not be a disappointment. Spectators can get as close to their favorite player and celebrity as the ropes will allow. Celebrities are always accessible following their golf play to the crowds seeking autographs.

The ever popular Classic Hope Square concept has expanded over the years and now showcases the media center, a variety of food and beverage concessionaires, beer and wine gardens, a large merchandise tent, a big-screen video wall with continuous showings of all the tournament action, many interesting exhibitors, an abundance of fun activities for kids and parents, and live music each afternoon. Hope Square is located just inside the general public entrance and on the short pathway to either the Palmer Private or Nicklaus Private courses. It is the place to hang out, shop, fill up on food and drink, and watch the players warm up at the nearby driving range and putting facility.

On the weekend, the luxurious Bob Hope Club, overlooking the 18th green at the Palmer Private, is the premier location for individuals and businesses who appreciate an upscale setting, rubbing elbows with the celebrities who drop in and being close enough to the action to almost read the putts.

The Bob Hope Classic has but one real winner and mission—charity. Corporate sponsors, amateur players, spectators, volunteers and the celebrities who donate their time to play in the tournament are all vital to the accomplishment of this goal. Since 1960, more than $47 million in charity funding has been distributed; by the start of the 2010 tournament, the figure will likely approach $49 million. Among the many charities benefiting from the Classic are thousands of needy or abused children who enjoy a warm bed and a hot meal, hundreds of homeless who receive shelter and rehabilitation services, and a variety of services providing support for serious health conditions and societal needs. The tournament’s charity also supports the Guide Dogs of the Desert and our local Boys and Girls clubs and Big Brothers organizations.

Everyone is invited to the City of La Quinta to join in the fun of The Bob Hope Classic 2010 tournament for a week of great weather, excitement and dramatic PGA TOUR professional golf.
