La Quinta Government

The City of La Quinta has a variety of commissions, boards and committees that serve as advisory bodies to the City Council on matters affecting the city. The following is a brief synopsis of each commission, board or committee. Individuals may contact the departments directly for further information.

Architectural and Landscaping Review Committee

Established in 1998 and coordinated by the Community Development Department, the committee is comprised of three members appointed by the City Council. Meetings are held at City Hall. The primary function of this committee is to serve as an advisory body to the Planning Commission through design related recommendations.

Building and Construction Appeals Board

Established in 1985 and coordinated by the Building & Safety Department, the committee is comprised of five members appointed by the City Council. The board meets on an “as-needed” basis to hear appeals on decisions made by the Building & Safety Department. The board’s primary function is to determine the suitability of alternate materials and methods of installation.

Community Services Commission

Established in 1998 and coordinated by the Community Services Department, the commission is comprised of five members appointed by the City Council. Meetings are held the second Monday of every month at City Hall, 7:00 p.m. The commission’s primary functions include an array of responsibilities that address community service programs and the effectiveness of such programs, as well as determining the need for new programs and the lack of need for existing programs.

Cultural Arts Commission

Established in 1998 and coordinated by the Community Services Department, the commission is comprised of seven members. Meetings are held the second Thursday of every month at City Hall, 7:00 p.m. The commission’s primary functions are to make recommendations regarding the implementation of the Art in Public Places Plan, the recommendation of artworks and sites for public art, the research and solicitation of grants, the identification of needs of the community on the subject of arts and ways to involve the community and similar cultural arts programs.

Historic Preservation Commission

Established in 1994 and coordinated by the Community Development Department, the commission is comprised of five members appointed by the City Council. Meetings are held the third Thursday of every month at 3:30 p.m. The commission’s primary function is to serve as an advisory body to the City Council and Planning Commission in all matters relating to the identification, protection, restoration and retention of historic sites within the city.

Investment Advisory Board

Established in 1993 and coordinated by the Finance Department, the board is comprised of five members appointed by the City Council. Meetings are held the second Wednesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. The principal functions of the board are:

1. review annually the city’s investment policy and recommend appropriate changes;
2. review monthly city treasurer’s report and note compliance with the investment policy and adequacy of cash and investments for anticipated obligations;
3. receive and consider other reports provided by the city treasurer;
4. meet with the independent auditor after completion of the annual audit of the city’s financial statements, and receive and consider the auditor’s comments on auditing procedures, internal controls, and findings for cash and investment activities; and
5. serve as a resource for the city treasurer on matters such as proposed investments, internal controls, use of change of financial institutions, custodians, brokers and dealers.

Established in 1982 and coordinated by the Community Development Department, the commission is comprised of five members appointed by the City Council. Meetings are held the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. The commission’s primary function is to carry out the powers and duties as prescribed in the Planning and Zoning Laws of the State of California and the City of La Quinta Zoning Ordinance as well as to serve as an advisory body to the City Council.
