Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

scientist

Science That Matters Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is a premier research facility that conducts some of the nation’s most innovative science. LLNL’s primary focus is national security, whether it’s ensuring the safety and security of the nation’s nuclear stockpile, developing capabilities to strengthen U.S. military forces and homeland security, or preventing the worldwide spread and use of weapons of mass destruction. Research efforts extend to other areas that address pressing national needs – such as cleaning up the environment, battling cancer, decoding the human genome, exploring the universe and studying global warming.

To conduct science on a grand scale, LLNL requires cutting-edge computational and experimental tools and state-of-the-art research facilities. The National Ignition Facility is currently under construction and will be the world’s largest laser. LLNL’s supercomputers are among the most powerful in the world. A wide range of administrative and operational functions, from efficient business practices to high-tech computer security to the safe use and disposal of hazardous materials also support LLNL’s research.

The Laboratory’s annual budget is approximately $1.6 billion. LLNL has over 8,200 employees. Its annual payroll is over $768 million, making it the largest employer in the City of Livermore and the fourth largest in Alameda County. LLNL is managed by the Lawrence Livermore National Security LLC for the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration.

LLNL’s Discovery Center (open Monday through Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.) has numerous science and technology displays. Community tours are also available. Call (925) 422-4599 or visit www.llnl.gov for additional information.
