Transportation and Location

Merced sits in the center of California’s Central Valley, within 60 miles of Fresno, Modesto and Yosemite National Park; within 130 miles of San Francisco, Sacramento and the Monterey Bay area; and within 275 miles of Los Angeles.

Getting around Merced is made simple through nearby highways, a regional airport, bus and rail services. The city’s ideal location affords it access to U.S. Highways 140 and 59, as well as State Highway 99. U.S. Highway 140 stands as one major route into Yosemite National Park, while U.S. Highway 59 offers a link to the Monterey Peninsula and the Big Sur Coast.

The Merced Regional Airport not only provides service for freight carriers, but also offers passenger service to a variety of select locations. Furthermore, Amtrak, located at 324 W. 24th St. affords rail service to commuters and travelers connecting to cities along the San Joaquin line, and two bus lines, the Merced County Bus Transit and YARTS (Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System) provide daily service from the California Welcome Center at 710 W. 16th St. in Merced.
