Monrovia Location and Transportation

FINDING YOUR WAY

train

Located where the 210 Freeway crosses Huntington Drive in a safe, quiet and quaint corner of Los Angeles County, the area offers direct access to the San Gabriel and San Fernando Valleys, Long Beach and the Inland Empire.

Providing convenient highway travel for commuting and business shipping alike, the 210 (Foothill) Freeway intersects Monrovia, with the 605 Freeway immediately to the east, connecting the city to the full metropolitan freeway system and transcontinental highways.

Monrovia is a well-connected town that makes getting around easy and convenient. Monrovia Transit is a community shuttle service that provides curb-to-curb transportation for residents and visitors to anywhere within the city limits. The Monrovia Trolley is a hybrid propane/electric trolley system established in 2002. It connects the Huntington Crossing hotels and restaurants with historic Old Town and the Huntington Oaks Shopping Center. The Foothill Transit and MTA bus lines also serve Monrovia.

A Transit Village to be built around Monrovia’s historic train depot is in development. As the Metro Gold Line light-rail extension moves from its current terminus in East Pasadena through Monrovia in the next several years, the Transit Village will serve a variety of needs: high-tech office, research and development space; residential units, including affordable housing; retail shops and a train, bus and auto transit center. The historic train depot will be repaired and adapted to new use this year in anticipation of the full development.

An early depiction of Monrovia’s Metro Gold Line Station looks east to Myrtle Avenue. Plans are already underway by the City of Monrovia to redevelop the area around the light rail station, including the renovation of the historic depot.

GOLD IN THE FOOTHILLS
As early as 2001, while construction was at its peak for the first 13.7-mile phase of the Metro Gold Line, the Los Angeles to Pasadena Metro Gold Line Construction Authority was already working with cities along the foothills of the San Gabriel Valley to lay the groundwork for the “Foothill Extension,” an additional 24-miles of light rail serving communities as far east as Montclair. The goal of the Construction Authority — a single purpose, autonomous transit agency created by the California Legislature in 1999 — was to build both the Los Angeles to Pasadena segment, as well as the extension to Claremont (later extended to Montclair) as efficiently as possible without compromise to design, safety or service.

Phase I from Los Angeles to Pasadena opened in July 2003, on time and actually under budget projections, and is now operated by Metro, the County’s regional transportation agency. The Foothill Extension is projected to be constructed in two phases: the first segment from East Pasadena’s Sierra Madre Villa Station to the proposed Citrus Station technically in Azusa, but bordering Glendora and more specifically the Citrus College campus. Proposed stations locations in between include Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale, and Downtown Azusa. Projected opening for this segment is currently 2011.

The proposed second segment of the Foothill Extension is projected to open in 2014 with station locations in Glendora, La Verne, Pomona, Claremont and Montclair (San Dimas is currently reviewing station / no station options).

In cooperation with San Bernardino County leadership, the Construction Authority is also exploring an Ontario Airport link from the current Montclair terminus. All construction and opening projections are pending final FTA approval.
