Monrovia Parks and Recreation

A WORLD TO EXPLORE

waterfall

A temperate climate and the gorgeous California landscape provide Monrovia residents with innumerable year-round recreation opportunities.

Monrovia alone has more than 140 developed acres of hiking and camping terrain, tennis courts, swimming pool and wading pools, a Community Center, YMCA, Boys and Girls Club and an Aquatics Center. The city’s Department of Community Services is dedicated to providing leisure time activities and services for residents and visitors to enjoy throughout the year.

The Recreation Division provides special events and programs, including Summer Concerts in the Park, the aquatics program, Halloween Carnival and Costume Contest, annual holiday events and the Spring Egg Hunt. The City operates Recreation Park, Library Park and several small neighborhood parks, as well as the extensive Canyon Park wilderness experience in the foothills.

Tucked into the foothills above Monrovia is Canyon Park, a wilderness-like experience that offers much more than just a beautiful setting. Canyon Park’s hiking trails wind through wooded glens and along rippling streams to a mountain waterfall. Stepping into the park is to step away from the urban reality of Southern California and into a timeless mountain environment rich in plant and animal life, picturesque, inviting and accessible.

The hillsides above Monrovia reach back into the Angeles National Forest and are rich riparian woodlands filled with deer, bears, mountain lions, opossum, raccoons, coyotes and all the wildlife still native to the San Gabriel Mountains. In developing and maintaining a 1,000-acre Wilderness Preserve, Monrovia is ensuring that this natural tapestry will continue to enrich the lives of future generations.
