For the People
Incorporated on April 25, 1956, Montclair has enjoyed 50+ years as a progressive, viable, and financially sound city. Montclair is a general-law city governed by a five-member City Council which is elected by Montclair voters. The City Council serves as the Board of Directors for the Montclair Redevelopment Agency. City Council members hold four-year terms, and the Mayor is directly elected by the voters. The current Mayor, Paul M. Eaton, has served as Mayor since 1995 and has been on the City Council since 1988. City Council meetings are held the first and third Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers of City Hall, 5111 Benito Street.
The city serves a population of 35,648 and encompasses a land mass of 5.5 square miles, which includes its sphere of influence. The city is full-service, with its own police and fire departments, both of which provide round-the-clock protection for its residents, the business community, and visitors. The Montclair Police Department is a municipal law enforcement agency responsible for the delivery of a full range of law enforcement services involving patrol, narcotics investigations, special task force and other specialized services. The department has evolved into a community-oriented organization employing 55 sworn officers today. The department also employs 38 full and part-time civilian support personnel and 18 volunteers, including eight reserve officers and three chaplains.
The goal of maintaining a secure and safe community has led to the City Council support of meeting the expansion needs of a growing police department that has outgrown its existing facility. Construction of a new 45,000 square foot police facility with a state-of-the art communications center and an emergency operations center is scheduled for a 2007 opening.
The Montclair Fire Department, employing 27 sworn personnel, operates out of two fire stations, providing 24-hour emergency service to the community that includes fire prevention, suppression and disaster preparedness. It also brings innovative regionalized fire protection, which allows the nearest department to respond to local emergencies.
Montclair’s government is strong in talent and achievement. The City has been the proud recipient of a meritorious award for excellence in budget practices, bestowed by the California Society of Municipal Finance Officers.
The Montclair Branch of the San Bernardino County Library offers a wealth of resources and services to residents and students. The library’s records and services include local marriage licenses and birth certificates. The Montclair Branch is located at 9955 Fremont Avenue, next to the Civic Center.
Montclair is home to various civic clubs and community organizations devoted to helping the community through low-cost medical services, after-school education, leadership training, daily food programs, and coordination with social service agencies.
