Filming on city streets and neighborhoods is coordinated through the City of Napa, which makes referrals to other city departments depending on the particular needs of any given production. The foundation of all projects approved to film in the City of Napa or on city property is the submission of a Film Permit application, insurance certificate and payment of use fees.
Numerous films, travel programs and commercials for major retailers often shoot on locations in Napa Valley. Recent filming activity has included “Napa,” a film based on Hans Ostrom’s novel “Three to Get Ready,” filmed in the fall of 2011 with a 2012 relase date; the Japanese remake of Alexander Payne’s film “Sideways;” TV episodes of “The Mentalist” and “Top Chef;” and “Bottle Shock,” a film about the birth of the Napa wine industry starring Alan Rickman, Chris Pine and Bill Pullman. Portions of “Bedtime Stories,” starring Adam Sandler, were filmed in Calistoga. Cameo Cinema screened the press premiere of “Eat Pray Love,” based on the book by Elizabeth Gilbert. An estimated 185 film critics attended the two showings. We are also seeing a number of Japanese TV shows featuring Napa Valley as a backdrop.
It is highly recommended that you make an appointment with the Film Liaison to discuss the particulars of your project. For more involved productions it will be necessary to schedule an onsite location visit to coordinate the details.
