Regional Legislative Alliance

The Oxnard Chamber has been a proud member of the Regional Legislative Alliance of Ventura & Santa Barbara Counties (RLA) since 2003.

The Regional Legislative Alliance is a cooperative council of the leading chambers of commerce and associations in the regions of Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.

Recognizing these areas as one geographic and economic community with regional issues common to each chamber and association, the mission of the RLA is to develop policy for the participating members on key federal and state issues and act as a united voice for the business community.

The partners of the RLA have memberships that employ more than 300,000 people in the region, and outreach continues to recruit other chambers and associations.

Political Involvement

In November 2008, the Oxnard Chamber celebrated the defeat of Measure V, the Oxnard Traffic Initiative, following more than a year’s effort. Measure V called for severe restrictions on redevelopment and development of residential, retail, commercial and industrial properties.

The Oxnard Chamber led a broad-based coalition of public safety, landowners, elected officials, labor, farmers and real estate interests. The result was a defeat of Measure V by 62% of the voters.

The Chamber was also instrumental in reelecting the mayor of Oxnard, the election of two new city council members and the election of a county supervisor who defeated a 32-year incumbent. In addition to those candidates, the Chamber also supported a local measure to implement a local sales tax that won 65% voter approval.

The Oxnard Chamber believes political action is a critical component in its role as a business advocacy organization.
