Location & Transportation

freeway

Palmdale is conveniently situated in Southern California, a mere 60 miles northeast of the bustling city of Los Angeles. The city, situated within Los Angeles County, is a part of the continuously expanding Antelope Valley; a region that, in addition to Palmdale, includes the incorporated cities of Lancaster, Tehachapi, California City and Ridgecrest, as well as sections of two counties.

Ground Travel Palmdale is nestled in the Antelope Valley’s southern region, directly off State Route 14, commonly referred to as the Antelope Valley Freeway. This route provides quick access to Greater Los Angeles (to the south) and the High Sierra vacation areas (to the north). Running through the Antelope Valley are Highways 138 and 58, with Interstate Freeway 5 (to Los Angeles and Sacramento) and Interstate Freeway 15 (to San Diego and Las Vegas) quickly reached via nearby highway systems as well. More scenic routes available for commute in and out of the area include the Angeles Forest and Angeles Crest Highways to the Pasadena area.

Palmdale Transportation Center Opening its doors in April of 2005, the Palmdale Transportation Center has become an invaluable transportation resource in the area. The Center stands as a regional multi-modal transportation center, offering commuters access to rail and bus options through the Antelope Valley Transit Authority’s Local and Commuter Bus Service, the Santa Clarita Transit, AMTRAK Throughway Bus Service, Greyhound Bus Service and the Metrolink.

LA/Palmdale Regional Airport The LA/Palmdale Regional Airport, located on 60 acres at the U.S. Air Force Plant 42, provides travelers with a newly remodeled 9,000 square foot terminal that reopened in May of 2007 for commercial service. The commercial terminal, which is capable of handling up to 300,000 commuters and travelers annually, is owned and operated by Los Angeles World Airports. Since its reopening, United Airlines has offered two daily roundtrip regional jet flights from the LA/Palmdale Regional Airport to San Francisco International Airport. Here, air travelers have access to a great number of connecting flights offering both domestic and international transportation destinations.

Find flight information at the LA/Palmdale Regional Airport by visiting www.lawa.org/pmd/welcomePMD.cfm or www.united.com.

Additional commercial air service options include Bob Hope Airport, located 50 miles away in Burbank, and Los Angeles International Airport, a short 68-mile drive from Palmdale.

What’s Next? While this region continues to expand, officials are constantly looking toward the future of efficient transportation options. The California High Speed Rail Authority was instituted in 1996 in order to plan for the development of a statewide high-speed train system. The submitted plan extends from San Francisco, Oakland and Sacramento in the north (which includes service to the Central Valley) to Los Angeles and San Diego in the south. Also included in the network is a route from Palmdale to Los Angeles. Get more information on the proposed project at www.cahighspeedrail.ca.gov.

What’s more, studies into developing the Orangeline High-Speed Maglev (magnetic levitation), a 108-mile transportation system, continue. An approximately 30- to 33-mile route from Palmdale to Irvine is included. Learn more at www.orangeline.calmaglev.org.
